Zero-Click Search

A zero-click search is a query where the user gets what they need from the results page itself, such as an AI Overview, map pack, or knowledge panel, and never visits a website, earning a business visibility but no visit.

Also known as: No-click search

A zero-click search is one that ends without anyone clicking a result. The searcher asks what time a pharmacy closes, sees the hours in the knowledge panel, and leaves. They ask who does emergency plumbing nearby, see three names and phone numbers in the map pack, and dial one directly. They ask a how-to question and read the AI Overview at the top. In each case a business may have been shown, but no website recorded the visit.

AI summaries made this much more common. Pew Research Center analyzed real browsing data from 900 US adults in 2025 and found that when an AI summary was present, users clicked an organic link on just 8% of visits, compared with 15% when no summary appeared. They clicked a link inside the summary itself only 1% of the time. Google publicly disputed the study, so hold it as strong evidence rather than settled fact, but the direction is hard to argue with.

Ahrefs measured the effect on the top spot specifically. Position-1 organic click-through rate on queries with an AI Overview fell 34.5% by April 2025 and 58% by December 2025, compared with queries without one. Ranking first still matters; it's just worth a lot less traffic on the queries where Google decides to answer directly.

For a small business, zero-click changes what success looks like. A dentist can be named in the AI Overview, shown in the map pack, and have their hours and phone number read straight off the results page, all without a website visit that analytics would record. If you measure marketing only by traffic, that dentist looks like they're losing when they may be getting more calls than ever. The visibility happened; the click didn't.

That's why Tibly measures the answer, not just the visit. Its scans record whether you were named in each engine's response, where, and how warmly, independent of whether anyone clicked. The built-in site analytics then attribute the visits that do arrive from AI engines, so you can see both what the engines said about you and how many people followed through.

FAQ

Common questions about Zero-Click Search

How much do AI summaries reduce clicks?
Pew Research Center found users clicked an organic link on 8% of visits with an AI summary present versus 15% without, based on 900 US adults' browsing in 2025. Ahrefs found position-1 click-through fell 58% on AI Overview queries by December 2025. Google disputed the Pew study.
If nobody clicks, does being in the AI answer still help my business?
Yes. A homeowner who reads your name and phone number in the answer can call you without visiting your site. The visibility happened even though analytics didn't record it. That's why measuring mentions directly, rather than inferring them from traffic, is the more honest metric.
How should I measure marketing if clicks are falling?
Add two things to traffic: whether you're named in the answers and surfaces customers see, and whether calls, bookings, and form submissions are rising. Being cited in an AI Overview or shown in the map pack produces phone calls that analytics never attribute. Track the mention, then track the outcome.
