Topical Authority

Topical authority is the depth and consistency with which a website covers one subject, shown by many specific, accurate pages on related questions, so search engines and AI systems treat the site as a reliable source for the whole topic.

Also known as: Topical depth, Subject-matter authority

Topical authority is a site's standing as the place to go on a subject. A plumbing company with forty pages covering slab leaks, tankless installation, repiping, backflow testing, permit requirements in its county, and price ranges for each has topical authority on residential plumbing in its area. A competitor with one services page and a contact form doesn't, even if that one page ranks. The idea is that depth across a topic signals real expertise in a way a single page can't.

It became an SEO concept because search engines appeared to reward sites that covered a subject comprehensively, ranking their pages more easily for new questions within that topic. Nobody outside Google can measure exactly how it's weighted, and a lot of what's written about it is inference. What's observable is that sites with deep, specific coverage tend to show up for more of the long-tail questions in their area than thin sites do.

For AI answers, the logic maps onto how retrieval works. An engine fanning a question out into sub-queries needs a source for each one. A site with a page on every sub-question is a candidate for every retrieval; a site with one broad page is a candidate for one. Ahrefs found the share of AI Overview citations from Google's top-10 pages dropped from 76% to 38% between July 2025 and March 2026 as fan-out took hold, which is consistent with specific pages beating well-ranked general ones. Nobody has published a study isolating topical authority's effect on AI citations, so treat the connection as reasoned, not proven.

For a dentist, law firm, or restaurant, topical authority is narrower than it sounds. You don't need to be the internet's authority on dentistry; you need to be the obvious source on dentistry in your city. That means pages on each service you offer, the questions patients ask before booking, what things cost, which insurance you take, and the neighborhoods you serve. Specific and local beats broad and generic every time, and it's a body of work you build over months, not a weekend.

This glossary is an example of the same idea applied to Tibly's own subject. On the customer side, Tibly's Actions surface the specific questions your site doesn't yet answer, draft the pages, and publish them to your Tibly-hosted site, so the coverage builds question by question from what the engines are actually asking about.

FAQ

Common questions about Topical Authority

How many pages do I need for topical authority?
There's no published number, and anyone quoting one is guessing. The practical test is coverage: does your site answer each specific question a customer asks before hiring you, for each service and each area you serve? For most local businesses that's dozens of focused pages, built over time, not hundreds.
Does topical authority help with AI answers or just Google?
The mechanism suggests both, since AI engines retrieve specific pages for specific sub-questions and a deep site has more candidates. But no study has isolated topical authority's effect on AI citations. Build depth because it answers customer questions; treat the AI benefit as likely rather than measured.
