Google AI Mode
Google AI Mode is a conversational search experience inside Google Search that answers a question with a full AI-generated response, supports follow-up questions, and pulls its sources from many related searches rather than the single query you typed.
Also known as: AI Mode, Google AI Mode search
Google AI Mode is the conversational tab in Google Search. Instead of a ranked list with an AI summary on top, you get a complete written answer, can ask follow-up questions in the same thread, and see a handful of linked sources alongside the response. It's Google's closest equivalent to asking ChatGPT or Perplexity, but built on Google's own index and Gemini models.
Under the hood, AI Mode uses what Google calls query fan-out. When you ask who repairs heat pumps in Boise, it doesn't run that one search. It issues several related searches at once (heat pump repair Boise, heat pump technician reviews, emergency HVAC Boise) and builds the answer from the combined results. That's why a page that never ranked for your exact phrase can still get cited, and why a page that ranks first can get skipped.
AI Mode and AI Overviews are not the same surface, even though both come from Google. Profound's research found the two cite the same URLs only 13.7% of the time. If you've optimized for AI Overviews and assumed AI Mode would follow, the data says otherwise. They're separate targets that happen to share a search box.
For a dentist or plumber, the practical effect is that AI Mode behaves like a picky researcher. It reads multiple sources and names businesses it can verify across them: your site, your Google Business Profile, review sites, local directories. A business with a thin website and inconsistent listings gives the fan-out nothing solid to pull together.
Tibly tracks Google AI Mode as one of seven engines, alongside ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Microsoft Copilot, and Claude. Because AI Mode and AI Overviews diverge so much, each is scored separately, so you can see whether you're showing up in one, both, or neither for the buying questions in your city.

- AI OverviewsAI Overviews is Google's AI-generated summary that appears above the organic results for many searches, answering the query directly and citing a handful of sources instead of showing ten ranked links.
- Query Fan-OutQuery fan-out is the technique Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode use to split one search into several related sub-queries and build one answer from the combined results, so cited pages often don't rank for the original query.
- Answer EngineAn answer engine is an AI system, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google's AI Overviews, or Copilot, that responds to a question with a direct written answer naming a small number of options instead of a page of ranked links.
- Conversational SearchConversational search is looking for information by asking an AI system full questions in natural language and refining with follow-ups in the same thread, as in ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Mode, rather than typing short keywords.
Common questions about Google AI Mode
- Is Google AI Mode the same as AI Overviews?
- No. AI Overviews is a summary shown above regular results; AI Mode is a separate conversational tab with a full answer and follow-ups. Profound found the two cite the same URLs only 13.7% of the time, so showing up in one doesn't mean you'll show up in the other.
- Does ranking first on Google get me into AI Mode answers?
- Not reliably. AI Mode fans your question out into several related searches and draws from all of them. Ahrefs found the share of AI Overview citations from top-10 pages fell from 76% to 38% between July 2025 and March 2026, and attributes that drop to the same fan-out mechanism.
- Can I track whether AI Mode mentions my business?
- Yes, but it takes repeated runs. AI Mode answers vary between sessions, so one check proves little. Run the buying questions for your trade and city on a schedule and record who gets named. Tibly does this daily for Google AI Mode alongside six other engines and reports it separately from AI Overviews.
